class="fake-button">

Life is so brief.

We do not have unlimited time to keep postponing postponing the things we care most deeply about.

I’m not saying blow up your life, but I am saying, are you actually using your life energy for the life you know you want to be living?

When I eventually lie down at the end of my life to pass, I want to know in every cell of my body that I went for it.

The things I truly cared about, I fully participated, I love, I created, I contributed.

I went all in.

And I want to share about vision because no one ever told me about vision really until I was in my mid-30s, I would say.

And I remember hearing it in a couple of different places and someone I really respected was like, you must clarify your vision.

And so I did.

But I didn’t like sit down one day and figure it out, right?

Life kept showing to me through my experiences, looking back, that the threads and the qualities were there.

So I just had to put them together.

And that’s what I’m inviting you to do as well.

So, when I was little, some of my happiest moments were simply staring out the window at nature as we drove through Southern California and the different places that we lived and traveled to.

I would watch the trees and the sky and the mountains and the sea and just soak it in.

I love being outside.

I loved laying on the ground looking up at the sky and the trees and being in the garden.

And I later discovered how much I love music.

I always cared deeply about people and I could empathically feel them and how I could support them.

And of course later, food, health, meditation, Ayurveda, relationships, you know, supporting people’s development.

Like, those were the things that I really was drawn to and cared about.

And being in nature and wild beautiful places, connecting around beautiful food.

Like, looking back, I see that all of those threads, all of those moments, were my clues, right?

Of like, what makes me come alive?

What makes me happy and draws me toward it?

What are my values?

What’s important to me?

Right?

And I’ve had so many moments, right, where I had a lot of experiences where I had the house, the relationship, the money, the things I thought were supposed to make me happy, but the way that I felt wasn’t fulfilled.

I noticed being in extraordinarily beautiful homes in very, I would say, exclusive places in the world.

And I absolutely love beauty, architecture, you know, craftsmanship, quality things, and nature and beautiful environments.

But in those moments I saw that fulfillment and happiness, contentment, isn’t the marble floors or the bank account or whatever these spaces offer that people are so deeply going for.

They don’t create the state.

So what I did notice were the qualities in those places that I was drawn to.

Nature.

Beauty.

The feeling of spaciousness.

Order.

Light.

Support.

A feeling of ease and depth and subtleness.

And in a way it was like a temple or like a sacred space, but it was the environment and the space it created for life.

And those qualities are really the most important thing about that.

It informed the qualities and the values that I have in creating spaces for people to thrive, right?

And also I want to say, this is not about designing the perfect environment.

Because of course India and different travels that I’ve had have given me a lot of perspective around this.

Because obviously we can create beautiful intentional spaces that support life, and I do believe that’s incredibly important.

But also we want to cultivate like a depth of stability and okayness to not just depend on being in the perfect environment.

The deeper work for me is cultivating something within myself that I carry into whatever environment life puts me in, right?

And that is capacity.

So when I’m talking about vision, I’m not talking about another goal.

I’m not really talking about goals.

Dreams show us possibilities.

Vision give those possibilities direction and more of a shape and a form.

Embodiment is how we go towards it and start to live it in reality and work towards it in reality.

But a vision evolves because you evolve, right?

Life keeps informing you.

You have experiences that teach you things.

You fail.

You succeed.

You discover something, like I did, that I thought would give me happiness and success doesn’t actually nourish you.

And something you might have ignored or didn’t even have in your awareness actually matters so much.

And vision is an alive thing because you’re in an alive relationship with life, right?

And it basically makes this distinction between rigid ambition and goals or a vision that’s more expansive, inclusive, and connected to the way life works.

And this really resonates with me.

It’s not about conquering something.

It’s about something you continuously come into a deeper relationship with.

So as an example, an underlying principle in my vision is whatever it is that I’m doing in work, in life, how deeply that the way that I am touches another human life is how rich my life is.

And that is part of my vision.

It’s not about what I accomplish as much as it it’s about what becomes possible in other people’s lives because of my influence.

What opens up for them?

What kind of life does that create?

What kind of possibility does that create?

So again, I’m just inviting you to kind of explore.

What have you felt most alive with in your life?

When have you felt most alive?

Not, what should my vision be?

Maybe you’re already super in touch with your vision, but start with your life.

When have you felt most alive?

What experiences have made you feel deeply, have really connected to you, have moved you and sparked you in a deep way?

What qualities were present in those moments?

What have you achieved, acquired, that you thought would fulfill you but did not?

What was the deeper thing that you were attempting to achieve by acquiring those things?

What did it mean?

What did you think it would bring you?

What keeps showing up throughout your life that you continuously care about?

What is that theme or thread that runs through your life?

And if you already know what matters to you in every area of your life, what is interfering with your ability to organize your life around it right now?

So if you already know what your vision is and what really matters to you, what is it that is interfering with your ability to organize your life around it right now?

So I would just invite you again, connect to your vision.

Connect to your life.

Connect to what’s mattered to you.

What’s moved you.

What sparks you.

What excites you.

What you’re deeply pulled towards.

Pay attention.

Write it down.

And what I recommend is writing it down in all the different areas.

Your health.

Your relationships.

Work.

Your contribution.

And then little by little, have the courage and build the capacity to organize your life around what you deeply care about.

Love and blessings.
<div class="subscription-widget-wrap-editor" Even this morning, I was thinking, “Am I sharing too much?” But then I realized something: why am I telling these stories? It is because everyone has a story, and very few of them are neat, tidy, perfect, non-messy.

Human journey is messy. Relationships are messy. Families are messy. Life can be messy. One of the things that I’ve really explored over the last 30 years is this: what are the conditions that allow a human being to become healthy, whole, thriving, and fully alive, no matter what happened to them? Great childhood, “great life” or difficult one?

A big part of what I’ve discovered is that healing is just being with what is, and it’s not glossing over the hard parts of your story. It’s learning to see them clearly and relate to them differently. We’re not with shame, blame, or making them your identity, but allowing them to be felt, acknowledged, illuminated, and taken out from underneath shame.

The way you stop identifying with your story as a victim is by just being with it in a real human way. Doing this, some of the origins work that I do is because we don’t want to bypass pain, sadness, grief, and just challenge. It’s in our memory, bodies, both intellectually, emotionally, psychologically, and in our physical tissues. A lot of clearing ourselves and making us truly available to life is by just allowing the process of letting go. That starts with awareness, but also it’s important to have a context that makes it a healthy relationship with it.

The lotus doesn’t grow despite the mud. It grows because of it. That is like the fertilizer for the beautiful lotus that grows, and because it allows our experiences to become wisdom, to make us wise, not wounded.

I am not looking for sympathy. No, I am totally good with this because I know who I am, and I know what this called me to do. I am truly unburdened from it. It’s a story, and it doesn’t have the grip on me that it used to.

Also, I sat in rooms with people whose stories were unimaginably painful. Many, many rooms and many, many people: abuse, loss, addiction, neglect, and horrific things and suffering. It is obviously not a competition. It is part of being human. It doesn’t even matter. I also have sat with people who are like, “Oh, my childhood was great,” and they feel like whatever they have going on is not anything compared to what other people go through. It’s still their experience of so many things, and it’s how it landed in the body. It can still be experienced as trauma, certain things that happen, even if you had a great childhood.

It’s not about becoming a victim. It’s not about whose story is harder or what’s more difficult. Feeling sorry for people is not it. It’s about being clear that we’re human. If we don’t look at things and be with them and allow ourselves to process them in a healthy way, that becomes that accumulated gunk that clouds our life, right? This is all about digesting it, processing it, so that we become free, nothing more, nothing less.

Yes, we take everything life gives us. We allow it to become wisdom, compassion, discernment, and a way of truly relating to anyone and everyone. Whatever you’ve lived through, your story does not determine the quality of life you’re capable of creating. It becomes part of the soil, and you can grow from it. That’s where your freedom lives.

They even say that in the study of DNA, right? You can have DNA chains that do not get activated depending on the lifestyle you live, so it’s even noticeable in science. That’s also why all these different frameworks and angles I spent my life studying, I think, are important, because not just one of them creates the answer. Nature is complex, just like human life is complex. All of these things need to be worked with from different angles because each one has a certain aspect of being human. Cultivate more freedom, more aliveness, more discernment, more vitality, and a greater capacity to participate in beautiful, complicated, extraordinary, stunning, and at times heartbreaking life.

This is what I’ve been studying all along, and I hope you join me in this beautiful relationship with life, where it turns into wisdom. You don’t let the accumulation and the lack of healthy processing weigh you down and make you less alive. Let’s become free.

Take my Evolve assessment here https://www.naomiscottcoaching.com/evolve-assessment

Thanks for reading! someone suggested I speak about the Fourth of July, my first instinct was, hmm, what would I even say about that? And then I sat with it. And the more I sat with it, the more I realized there is actually a very direct connection between this day, the work I do and my own life path. A very direct one.

Because the Fourth of July is about rupture, of breaking away. A declaration that an old authority no longer gets to rule your future. And in its own way, that is exactly the work that I have devoted my life to.

Thanks for reading! I no longer want my life organized around what once protected me but no longer reflects who I actually am.

And that kind of independence is rarely loud. It’s not fireworks. It’s not a spectacle. It is usually quiet, private and deeply earned.

And as I started thinking about this day through that lens I realized it connects to my own life more directly than I first remembered.

My father is a veteran. He served in Vietnam. My brother is a veteran too in Iraq and Afghanistan. I grew up with fireworks and the cookout, the part that we see on the surface, but underneath that I also grew up in a house where pain was deep and visceral and real but not processed.

It was expressed. It leaked everywhere. It was vented onto all the people in the room. The things that were said were not coming from clarity, self-responsibility, or emotional maturity. They came from confusion, stress, control, and pain that had nowhere else to go.

As a child I did not have the language for any of that but I just felt it. The volatility, the confusion, the atmosphere in the house shifting and being so scary without warning. The sense that people I loved were carrying pain they did not know how to process and that pain was being put on everyone around them.

It took me a while to understand that this kind of inherited unprocessed pain is the reason that I do the work I do today.

You can’t heal what you won’t look at and I learned that first not as a practitioner but as a daughter, as a person, as a woman in the world…and this does not stay inside of one family.

I thought it did - but as I grew I realized absolutely not.

This same pattern I watched in my own house, I experienced in my own reality, I have seen in many families and in different forms all over the world.

In India being with people and culture that has survived colonization, and they are still finding their way back to wholeness. With friends whose families have descended from slavery carrying grief that was never allowed full expression.

We are standing on land taken from people whose names and traditions most of us were never actually taught.

War, power, colonization, control, torture. Different shapes, same root.

Unprocessed pain becomes unconscious behavior. Unconscious behavior gets inherited by the next generation and the one after that and the one after that until someone decides to look at it instead of passing it on - and that decision changes everything.

And this is why what I believe after 30 years of doing this work we are living in a moment where real tools exist for this! not theoretical ones but real ones- real meditation, real somatic and psychological understanding, real frameworks for self-accountability, nervous system repair and inner transformation - we have access to what no other previous generation has- we can choose differently -not perfectly but differently.

And this is the part I most want to say.

You still can live in joy no matter what happened to you! no matter what has been passed down to you before you had any choice in the matter- if you do the work, if you look honestly, grieve what needs grieving, and metabolize what has been carried- joy is still available.

I do not say that lightly.

The world is magic, it’s full of beauty, it’s a miracle, love is real - we are still allowed to thrive! some of the most great gifts in my life have come from crossing cultures, traveling and meeting people whose lives look nothing like mine - only to find the same human heart underneath. and to be able to do that now at this moment in history which we could do at no other time - because I am a woman living largely on my own terms - free to travel the world by myself! This is something that I do not take for granted.

And I hold that- alongside of the grief - alongside of the heartbreak - alongside of the gratitude- alongside of the reality of what has been sacrificed by so many people. Including my own father and brother. I’m not taking any of that away - we can hold all of it both polarizations and everything in between.

So this year when the fireworks go off I will be holding all of it at once. The grief for what has never been processed, the gratitude for what was sacrificed, and the quiet hard-won freedom that comes when you stop letting the past rule your life! When you do the inner work to free yourself.

Wherever you are this weekend and whatever this day means to you or does not mean to you- I hope you give yourself permission to feel what is actually true. And I hope you remember that joy is still yours to claim. Whatever you are carrying, you can put it down and be in joy.

And may we use this moment to truly celebrate life by doing the work required to reclaim our health, our freedom and our independence from old wounds, inherited chains and limitations, and unconscious ways of being - and in doing so create a new world for both ourselves and for one another.

Blessings and love 🙏🏻💛🪷

Take the Evolve Assessment

Where is unprocessed pain still running your life? Didn’t ask me anything. No health intake. Just held my pulse for about a minute.

And then he told me my constitution. All the symptoms I’d been struggling with my whole life. What to eat, what to avoid, which herbs to take.

I was willing to try anything, I had felt unwell for so long. And then later I prepaired the meal he recommended.

Dal. Ghee. Spices. Simple, fresh, vegetarian food. A particular combination of tastes.

And for the first time in my entire life, I finished a meal and felt good. Not just not-bad. Actually good. Settled. Satiated. Nourished in a way I had never experienced before.

But here’s what I understand now that I didn’t understand then.

The food was never just about food.

I had digestive issues from childhood. Constipation, stomach pain, bloating, from as early as I can remember. And yes, the meat and potatoes diet of a British household in the seventies wasn’t helping. But that wasn’t the whole story.

The whole story was the nervous system of the home I grew up in. The stress between my parents. The complicated family dynamics. The emotional environment at the dinner table. The ways that food and sugar became the thing we reached for when life felt unstable or painful or overwhelming. The ways that a child’s developing system absorbs not just what’s on the plate, but everything happening in the room while she’s eating it.

Eastern wisdom has a word for this. Agni. Digestive fire. And what I’ve come to understand after thirty years of this work is that Agni isn’t just physical. It governs how we process everything we take in. Food, yes. But also experience. Emotion. Trauma. Relationship. Loss.

When the nervous system is dysregulated, digestion suffers. Not metaphorically. Literally. The fire goes out. And when the fire goes out, nothing gets processed properly. Not the meal. Not the grief. Not the pattern you’ve been trying to break for twenty years.

That is the map nobody gave us.

And that is what I want to give you today.

WHAT EASTERN WISDOM ACTUALLY MAPS

So what eastern wisdom helps us to map — and I’ve spent the last almost thirty years going deeper into this — is that eastern traditions, Ayurveda, Chinese medicine, yoga, elemental medicine, meditation, they have been mapping the human being with extraordinary precision for thousands of years. Not just the human being, but life itself.

And what they map is not just the body. It’s a layered, living, intelligent system.

Let me give you just a few pieces of this map, because even a glimpse of it can change everything.

First, the five elements. Ether, air, fire, water, earth. These are not just poetic concepts. They are literally the underlying structure of all physical reality. All of it, including you. Your constitution, your unique combination of these elements, your tendencies, your emotions, your vulnerabilities, your gifts, your strength, your vision, your intelligence — all of these are an expression of how these elements combine in you.

Second, there’s something called the koshas. The five energy sheaths. We have a physical body, yes. But we also have a breath body, a mind body, a wisdom body, and what the yogis call a bliss body. And most of us are only tending to the outermost layer and wondering why we still feel empty, why we still feel unwell.

And then there’s Agni. Digestive intelligence. And as I said at the beginning, Agni isn’t just your stomach digesting food. There’s mental digestion, emotional digestion, digestion happening at every layer of your being. And this is where it gets profound. Eastern wisdom understands that we have five senses — sight, sound, touch, smell, taste — because there are five elements. Five limbs because there are five elements. Five koshas, five layers of the human system, from the physical body all the way through the breath body, the mind body, the wisdom body, to what the yogis call the bliss body. This is not coincidence. This is a system so internally coherent, so complete, that everything within it reflects everything else.

And that means everything you take in through any of those five senses — every image, every sound, every conversation, every piece of information, every relationship, every environment you walk into — all of it enters your system and needs to be metabolized. Processed either into wisdom or released as waste. Either it helps you see more clearly, or it gets eliminated.

When Agni is weak, at any layer of your being, none of that processing happens properly. Not the food. Not the emotion. Not the experience. Not the trauma. This is why you can spend years in therapy, understand everything about yourself intellectually, and still feel stuck. Because the metabolism — the actual processing and release — isn’t happening at the level where it needs to happen.

THE PLACE BEYOND WORDS

Now I want to say something that might sound paradoxical, coming from someone who just walked you through a framework.

Understanding this intellectually is important. You need enough of the map to trust the territory. To show up for the meditation, to change how you eat, to reorganize your life around what your constitution actually needs.

But the map is not the destination.

Because here’s what I’ve experienced after many decades of this work, after years in India, after thousands of hours of meditation and practice: the effects of this work on the body, on the nervous system, on what Ayurveda calls the bliss body, are simply beyond words. Beyond definition.

And I mean that literally. Words are not adequate.

It’s like trying to describe watching a sunset. Or being in the room when a baby is born. Or sitting with someone you love as they’re dying. Or standing at a fallen tree and feeling the ground shift under everything you thought was stable. Surviving something that shakes the ground you are standing on.

These are nature’s processes. Vast, infinite, organizing themselves with a precision and intelligence that we can observe but cannot fully explain.

And the body is exactly that.

Right now, without any effort from you, your heart is beating. Your cells are repairing. Your liver is filtering. Your nervous system is running ten thousand processes simultaneously. Nobody taught you how to do any of that. It is innate intelligence, and it has been running since way before you drew your first breath. Since those two cells of your parents met and grew your entire system.

So much of what I see in the people I work with, and what I lived myself for a long time, is a disconnection from that intelligence. Not an absence of it. We wouldn’t be here if it were absent. It’s a disconnection from it. We override it with stress, with the wrong food, with the wrong environments, with lives that are fundamentally out of alignment with the way nature actually works.

And the eastern traditions understood this. Here’s what astonishes me every time I think about it: the precision of the circadian maps in Ayurveda and Chinese medicine, the knowledge of celestial distances, of biological rhythms, of surgical techniques — all of it was mapped in texts that are over six thousand years old. Before telescopes. Before measuring instruments. Before the scientific method.

They knew how far the moon is from the Earth. They knew how far the Earth is from the Sun. They had it mapped. It’s there in the ancient texts.

That is not just scholarship. That is a quality of attention and attunement to the natural world that we have largely lost, and that we are only now, through biohacking and neuroscience and quantum physics, beginning to reconnect to.

What I know from my own experience is this: vitality, health, genuine thriving — these are not achievements. They are not the result of the right supplement stack or the perfect morning routine. They are what happens when you participate with the intelligence that is already running through you. When you stop overriding it and start aligning with it.

That is the invitation of Eastern wisdom.

Not to understand it completely. That’s not possible, and it was never the point. But to understand it enough to get out of your own way. And allow the magic to come through.

THE YOGA STORY

I’ll give you a personal example of what I mean.

I practiced yoga for over thirty years. Physical yoga, the kind most of us in the West know. It was great. It made me more flexible, more grounded, it reset my nervous system. I completely valued it.

And then in 2021 I learned traditional Isha Hatha yoga. Unmodified. Unchanged. The original science, exactly as it was designed.

The difference was not subtle.

Suddenly I understood why the precise breath-to-movement ratio matters. Why you bring your two big toes together, to keep the pranic system circulating within itself, to prevent energy from dispersing outward. Why the sequence is the sequence. Why the angles are the angles. Even when I don’t understand it intellectually, I can feel why this design works with the actual design of the human system. The subtle channels, the flow of prana, the way energy moves through a living body.

Over thirty years of yoga, and I had been working with an approximation. The original form was exponentially more powerful. Because it’s a technology. A precise technology.

And that’s also why I only recommend certain types of meditation to people. Because we’re talking about a diluted generalization versus a precise science and practice.

That is what happens when ancient wisdom gets filtered through cultures that don’t fully understand it. You get something that kind of works. But you lose the precision. And in this system, precision is everything.

THE CIRCADIAN MAP

One of the things that most surprises people when they first encounter this is the precision of the circadian maps in both Ayurveda and Chinese medicine. Every organ system has its own two-hour window in the day where it is most active, most alive, most in need of support or rest.

And for me personally — having had various dental issues over the years — when I looked at the Chinese medicine map of which teeth connect to which organ systems, it directly, precisely connected to the areas of weakness in my own body. Unbelievably precise. Unbelievably cool.

And I remember thinking: this is not mysticism. This is a system of observation so refined, so accumulated over thousands of years, that Western science is only now beginning to catch up.

Intermittent fasting. Lymphatic drainage. Tongue scraping. Oil pulling. Circadian eating. All of it originated in these traditions. The biohackers didn’t discover it. They rediscovered it.

WHY THIS CHANGES EVERYTHING

Here’s why I’m telling you all of this.

Most of the people I work with have done a lot of work. Therapy, coaching, clean eating, exercise, meditation. They are not lazy or unconscious. They are genuinely trying.

And this was me, by the way, for a long time.

But something is still missing.

And that something, in almost every case, is grounded in this deeper understanding of what they actually are. The wholeness of the system. Because you cannot resolve a pattern that lives in the body just by thinking about it or knowing more about it. You cannot nourish parts of your system if you don’t know what actually nourishes them, or that those parts of your system even exist. You cannot support a digestive fire you don’t know about. You cannot process held emotions and stored experiences if you don’t understand the context of how to do that.

The Eastern map doesn’t replace everything you’ve already done. It gives it a foundation. A context within which all of it actually makes sense. And then you can see where the pieces fit.

That is why Energetics and Eastern Wisdom is the first pillar of EVOLVE.

Because without it, everything else is built on incomplete ground.

If any of this resonates, I’d love to hear from you. Drop me a message. Tell me what landed, tell me what questions it raised.

And if you want to go deeper into this work, the link is below.

Love and Blessings. 🙏🏻💛🪷

Apply to Work with me

Thanks for reading! class="fake-input">

If you read the companion article, you’ll know I open with something that stopped me.

A Gallup report found that four out of five workers globally are checked out—the lowest engagement level since 2020.

The productivity advice being offered in response—things like time blocking, goal setting, and avoiding multitasking—is honestly so superficial. It feels like a Band-Aid over what’s actually going on at a deeper level.

Today, I want to share a deeper insight into what those root causes can be and what’s actually happening when someone checks out.

There’s a lot of nuance to this, but I’m going to share this perspective through four client stories. The pattern, including in my own life, is very, very similar.

I hope you get something beautiful out of this.

And yeah, let’s go.

One of my clients works in a corporate tech environment.

Super smart. Capable. And at one level, he has real clarity. He knows why he’s there. He’s building toward something and using this chapter fairly intentionally.

But he was exhausted, demotivated, and disengaged to a degree.

When we went deeper into this, it wasn’t just that the job was unfulfilling, that he didn’t care, or that he was just there for the money.

Partly, you could say that.

But underneath it was something much more nuanced.

The way his manager was leading didn’t honor and respect his nature. It didn’t bring the best out of him.

In fact, instead of using his strengths, his intelligence, or what he’s actually an expert at, the environment demanded that he accommodate, explain, and calm the manager.

In other words, he had to do everything the way the manager needed him to do it so the manager felt comfortable, rather than using his own genius to contribute to the team.

He’s having to play a political game, and it feels fundamentally like a waste of energy.

Not getting the project done.

Not using his energy for actual project execution.

And that is genuinely difficult and frustrating.

Here’s what else we discovered.

Of course, that dynamic triggers something old.

Family patterns.

Parental issues.

An inner child who didn’t get seen in their genius by anyone in authority—including parents, teachers, and community.

That deep wound of being genuinely smart, genuinely capable, wanting to contribute, but being missed, disrespected, and unrecognized.

And it can look like disengagement.

A little procrastination.

Exhaustion.

Withdrawal.

This is actually his nervous system trying to cope and still function, even though something painful is being triggered.

By doing this work with me, he’s getting to see through those perspectives and feel what’s underneath his behavior. He’s getting to process it.

It’s still getting triggered, but there’s a lot more distance being created and a greater ability to respond, stay present, and choose to show up as fully as possible—even though there’s a part of him that’s saying, “I want out.”

It’s not a motivation problem.

This isn’t solved by a clearer goal, a more structured schedule, or a daily productivity system.

This is a deeper inner-child neurological trigger being activated in a professional setting.

And that will keep happening until we address it at the root and he becomes more capable and adaptable beyond that imprint.

And honestly, that’s the truth of life.

Whatever is showing up in our lives—whether it’s work, intimate relationships, or something else—these are mirrors that trigger whatever wiring we carry on an inner level.

Another client came to me with what she called a procrastination problem.

She had a huge to-do list. She genuinely wanted to accomplish all of these things.

Timing was tight, and she really wanted to create this life for herself.

But then she would lose days.

She would sit down to work and just hit this heavy resistance.

She couldn’t explain it, and she couldn’t push through it. She could not make it happen.

She tried things like scheduling systems, productivity hacks, all these kinds of things. She even had another coach helping her with it.

They would create goal targets and daily, weekly, and monthly execution plans.

But it was still happening.

None of it was actually touching the deeper root.

So again, when I was sitting with her and we traced it down together, part of what surfaced was this:

The way her boss micromanaged, hovered, and checked in felt like surveillance because of the way her nervous system works and the insecurities she carries.

This wasn’t something she consciously connected to.

But when we looked back, it was very similar to how her parents functioned with her.

It was so deeply installed in her nervous system.

She was trying to avoid it.

She was confused.

And she kept trying to muscle through it.

But it totally didn’t work.

Looking closer, her parents had micromanaged her throughout childhood and kept her on a very strict schedule.

And what happens—and this is really important—is that what she was calling procrastination was not actually laziness.

No.

She has enormous drive, creativity, and capability.

But all of that aliveness was sitting underneath a protective response because her nervous system couldn’t function freely in that environment.

She even noticed that when her boss was there versus when her boss wasn’t there, there was a dramatic difference.

When her boss wasn’t around, she achieved way, way, way more.

So in an environment where everything is monitored, controlled, and micromanaged, her full expression didn’t feel safe.

It felt dangerous.

And it felt incredibly confining.

Again, this is all a subconscious response.

And you can’t biohack your way out of that.

You clearly cannot schedule your way through it until you understand what’s actually happening at a deeper level and begin to work with that part of yourself.

As you become able to see it, you gain some leverage with it within your own makeup.

Otherwise, every strategy simply adds another layer of pressure on top of something deeper that’s asking to be seen.

The only reason these things come up in the mirrors of our relationships and our work is so that we can see what’s happening underneath.

So that we can experience it.

And complete it.

Third client.

She owns her own business.

She’s built something truly successful and very beautiful.

There’s artistry, creation, and design in what she does, and she knows how valuable that is.

She noticed that when certain clients came in—particularly those who were very transactional, looking for a deal, and not appreciative of the level of craft, care, and intention she’d put into what she’d created—she would get reactive, dismissive, and at times even rude.

In ways that she knew weren’t aligned with who she wanted to be.

She would tell me:

“I don’t want to be like that.”

“This is going to damage my reputation.”

Even if these weren’t the people she wanted as clients, she knew it would still impact how she was perceived in her community.

So when she came to me and said,

“Hey, I’m noticing this. How do I do this better? How do I communicate better? How do I handle this?”

Again, we went much deeper than techniques.

Much deeper than:

“When this happens, say this.”

Or:

“Do this instead of that.”

We looked at what those transactional interactions were actually touching inside her.

They were triggering feelings of being dismissed.

Not seen.

Not valued.

Her creativity being ignored.

A very old childhood wound around who she was being disregarded and dismissed.

Her particular gifts.

Her essence.

Not being seen at all.

So her anger wasn’t really about the client.

It was a very old wound being touched.

Yes, we worked on communication skills.

Yes, we worked on strategy.

But that deep neurological, emotional, psychological, and nervous-system reaction isn’t a sales problem.

It’s not a brand-positioning problem.

And it’s not a tactical problem.

It’s a deeper issue showing up through her business.

And again, these things keep showing up until they’re addressed at the level they’re asking us to pay attention to.

Last example.

A man who built something very substantial.

A business generating significant recurring revenue every month.

Very predictably.

Largely running on its own flywheel.

No emergency.

No crisis.

From the outside, very successful.

But he was flat.

His health was suffering.

His energy was low.

And his team, rather than fully supporting him, were taking advantage of the situation and using his disengagement as cover for their own lack of motivation.

He knew it.

He could feel it.

He wanted to grow.

But something in him had stalled.

He couldn’t quite move.

Again, we went deep.

Really deep into the roots.

Exploring his fundamental relationship with life.

Where the pain was.

What his choices had been built on.

And what they were costing him.

We worked through a significant amount of that together.

And what happened wasn’t gradual.

All of the energy that had been tied up in unresolved material came back online.

He re-engaged.

He tripled his revenue.

He built a team that was genuinely aligned with him.

And the side project he’d been sitting on for years—something he cared deeply about but hadn’t had the energy, clarity, or vitality to execute—began moving.

It’s now growing into something hugely significant.

Meaningful in terms of his life’s work.

Meaningful in terms of impact.

And meaningful in terms of revenue potential.

Massively.

And that’s amazing.

Because what happened was an integration with what he truly wanted to create and the bringing online of all the energy required to execute it.

And that is what becomes available on the other side of this work.

Not strategy.

Not necessarily a new hire.

But a human being who has freed up all the energy that was being consumed by unresolved pain, lack of clarity, and parts of themselves that were not aligned with what they actually wanted to be doing in the world.

Then they get to feel, see, and experience what becomes possible when that energy is available again.

It’s incredible.

It’s beautiful.

And I’ve experienced it myself.

That’s why I can walk people through this work so powerfully.

Four people.

Four completely different situations.

But one common dynamic underneath all of them.

What looks like checking out, disengagement, procrastination, reactivity, flatness, or low energy is almost never a productivity problem.

It’s almost never solved by a different planning system or a more disciplined routine.

All of that energy lives in the body, the nervous system, and the inner landscape.

It’s tied up in something unresolved.

And we have to look deeper.

Resolve it.

Clear it.

And then move forward with all of that trapped energy available for execution again. Thanks for reading! The article was about something called the interstitium, which, according to scientists, may be a third circulatory system in the body. A hidden pathway between organs that moves fluids, cells, and molecules before they re-enter the lymphatic and cardiovascular systems. The headline essentially was “Everything is connected.”

Thanks for reading! I sort of laughed out loud because, of course, it’s all connected. Of course it is. There was a second reaction underneath the first one that you can probably hear by the tone of my voice. Which is that there was a part of me that is so genuinely frustrated. Not at the science. I’m happy for the science. It’s exciting, and I’m thrilled it’s getting attention. It’s about the timing, and to explain why that is, I’ll tell you a little bit about my own story.

When I was a little girl, I thought I would be a doctor, and I had this very clear, deep sense from a very young age, probably three, that I wanted to help people heal, really heal, take their suffering away in a way that felt real, whole, lasting, and helpful. When I went to university, I had every intention of getting into medicine, but it didn’t take very long, because I actually was out of the university with a big medical school. I could just tell right away that the kind of help, the kind of support I wanted to give to people, I could feel that it wasn’t there. It wasn’t what the Western model is.I made, at that time, what felt like a super disorienting decision, because I walked away from that dream when I was 19 years old. I was like, “What am I going to do now?” I really had no idea.

Luckily for me, I encountered, at 19, little bits and pieces of the Eastern model. The idea that the body has more layers than just the physicality: energy systems, subtle layers, and the emotions and mind psychology that are deeper root causes of diseases and disorders in the physical body, because the physical is often a manifestation of imbalance in deeper layers. That made sense to me and of resonated with what I felt.

In 1997, I started working in holistic medicine offices just as an assistant, and then I went to school in San Diego. That’s when I started studying Ayurveda, somatics, bodywork, energy systems, meditation, yoga sciences, and counselling. I have been a full-time practitioner ever since, for almost 30 years.

Honestly, I needed all of it myself. I was also my own first client. I have struggled with my own health for a long time, had multiple autoimmune issues, and had digestive problems since I was very young. It wasn’t like I was sick, but it was like a whole list of symptoms that are not well, and the Western system had absolutely no answers for. When I was first encountered an Ayurvedic doctor in 2003, that changed everything for me, because for the first time I had a framework that, when I applied it, actually moved the needle for me. Through that, I healed my autoimmune condition. I’m not on medication. I’ve never been on medication, and the reason for that is not because I got lucky. It’s because I have poured my entire life, my movement, my diet, my meditation, yoga, the way I sleep, breathe, live, structure my days, the way I’m connected to nature, the lineages I’ve studied under, all of it, into the work of staying well and becoming more and more vital.

When I tell you I feel passionately about this, I want you to understand where that passion comes from. It’s not from theory. It’s from my own lived experience and my 30-plus years, even more really, of living inside that question and that continuous alive Exploration: what does health, vitality, healing really look like? How do you facilitate it?

What makes me even more passionate than my own story is what I’ve watched happen to other people and what fuels my work in the world.

I’ve had so many clients walk into my office who’ve been to 12 or more specialists. They’ve had every test run. They’ve tried so many medications. When they went to those doctors, they described every symptom. In fact, I’ve had them hand me pages of their symptoms, their medications, their supplements. Guess what? The doctor still didn’t know what was wrong with them. They would have years of suffering, and spent tens if not hundreds of thousands of dollars, and they still didn’t have answers.

My Experience

Contrast that with my experience of sitting in front of Ayurvedic doctors in India many times, who put their hands on my wrist and proceeded to tell me, with extraordinary precision, every imbalance in my body. And not just in my body, in my emotions, in my mind and my heart... In 90 seconds. No tests, no machines, no health intake history. No me telling them any symptoms. They just put their fingers on me and told me. It’s thousands of years of accumulated knowledge, held in the fingertips of that doctor, that practitioner sitting in front of me, present and genuine.

Not to mention what I’ve experienced in the clinics in India and how the treatments of panchakarma and Ayurveda have truly impacted my health in such a deep and beautiful way. That contrast, that lived experience, is in me. It’s been in me for a long time.

It breaks my heart that more people don’t have access to real effective health care.

The Important Distinction

I want to be very clear about something, though. I’m not anti-Western medicine at all. If I’m in a car accident, I want a Western trauma surgeon for sure. If I need hip replaced, I want the best orthopaedic surgeon money can buy. Western medicine at its best is a miracle of acute emergency mechanical intervention. It is incredible.

It’s saved millions and millions of lives. It is awesome, but western medicine treats the body like a machine made up of separate parts: cardiology here, knees here, gastroenterology here, mental health living in a completely different building. Almost no one is looking at the whole human being in their whole life, their whole nervous system, their whole relationship to the world around them. That’s changing a little bit, but it’s still in its infancy.

In eastern traditions, they didn’t make that mistake. They come from wholeness, and in Ayurveda, traditional Chinese medicine, yogic sciences, the body has never been separate from the mind, emotions, nervous system, energy. The mind is connected to the breath. The breath coordinates the mind and the body. It’s all connected to the seasons of food you eat, the relationships you keep, the quality of the life you live. . It’s all one system. It always has been, and so you can understand than, probably, that is why this has genuinely burdened me.

I’ve watched clients sit across from their doctors and ask, “Does it matter what I eat for this condition? I mean, we’re talking cancer here, okay?” Their doctors look at them in the eyes and say, “No, it doesn’t matter what you eat.”

This is the cost of the gap. We have the most expensive healthcare system in the world in this country and the most unhealthy population. This is one of the things that I am really passionate about: supporting people in connecting bridges to real tools of transformation. This is one thing that I’ve spent my last 30 years trying to support and bridge for myself, one client at a time.

Let me tell you how I feel from my own lived experience. I believe the future of medicine is integration, like real integration, not Western medicine borrowing a few buzzwords from the East, putting a meditation app in a hospital room, and calling it holistic. Although meditation apps are great, real integration where every human being, every patient, is treated as a whole. Part of the prescription pack can be:

Quality food

rest

circadian rhythm

fasting

cleaning your system

All of these things, ancient practices, are not seen as fringe or alternative but understood for what they actually are: thousands of years of human research with no side effects on what actually makes the body thrive. All of which, by the way, the New York Times article gestured at: every single one of those practices comes from the East.

This is why, when I introduce myself and my work either to people or on podcasts, I say I work at the intersection of East meets West. Very precisely, I’m trained in Western clinical bodywork, functional nutrition, evidence-based coaching, somatic psychology, and I spent decades in deep Eastern techniques, Ayurveda, yogic sciences, and in India in deep meditation in lineages that hold knowledge of 6,000 years that the West is only now beginning to verify. I don’t think we should choose one. They are most powerful when you have the integration of both.

The last thing I want to say, because I think it’s really important, is you do not have to wait for Western science to catch up before you start. If you’ve been feeling in your body that something is off and the tests come back normal and the specialist shrugs and the doctors tell you everything looks fine according to your blood work, I want you to listen to your body. In Ayurveda, there is something called the 6 stages of disease, and symptoms are signals that your body is trying to communicate to you that something’s out of balance. Imbalances do not show up in lab tests until they’re already at the 5th stage.

This is really, really important: the traditions have understood the body as an interconnected, intelligent, energetic system for 6,000 years, and every symptom you have is a sign and signal that would easily be understood and interpreted and would show you exactly what needs to be worked on in the Eastern system. I just want you to know that what you’re experiencing is real, and there is a way to understand it and to work with it holistically. This is part of the work that I do with my clients. It’s, for many years, what I’ve built my life and entire practice around. This work, in my opinion, is one of the most powerful investments you can make in this lifetime, in your body, in this one precious life that you have, yourself, your health, your awareness, your vitality.

If you would love to learn more about this work in any capacity, I would love to hear from you. My car battery had died, and my friend who watered my plants helped get it replaced, making sure it was one less thing I needed to worry about. A friend (and client) offered to pick me up from the airport…

And it felt good to have so many women stepping up to support me.

Originally, I planned to write about a very specific aspect of my programmes and work this week. I wanted to pull back the curtain even further -- but somehow that felt less important the closer I got to home.

Because this life is my work. I live my work. I breathe my work. (Yes, even in stale, recycled airplane air.) ;)

And so much of what I’ve learned connects to this willingness to travel and see the world from a 30,000-foot view.

For me, travelling -- especially to places like India, with a culture so different from the Western model of success -- has been one of the most profound teachers I’ve ever had. Not because it’s “exotic” in some superficial way, or because it underscores how privileged I am for everything I’ve had access to, but because it breaks the illusion that the way I live is the only way to be.

My mentor Sadhguru says it the best:

“The limitations we live within aren’t usually physical -- they’re perceptual. We think the world is the way we see it. We think our problems are the biggest problems. We think our way of living is the only way to live.”

So, on that note I’d love to give you two, perspectives…

The first is a reflection on my trip in my first days back from India: what I’m missing, what it’s taught me, and how that makes me feel.

You can listen to that here.

The second is a more practical guide to travelling: the essentials I use to cherish every moment, the practices I use to slow down and absorb the privilege (even in moments of stress) -- how it all sets me free from perceptual limitations…

And how it can set you free too. ❤️

Scroll on for more…

My Long-Haul Travel Essentials…

First let’s start with a list of those physical essentials (because you can’t be present and truly appreciate, when you’re physically uncomfortable).

Snug Shawl

One thing I always bring (which is kind of a girly thing but there’s no reason why men can’t enjoy this too!) is a cashmere blanket or shawl. The one I have is stunning, and packs down well, and completely envelopes me when the temperature drops on a flight.

Cashmere Sweater

I believe it’s important to travel in natural fibres as much as possible. A huge luxury, but one I’m mildly obsessed with, is my cashmere turtleneck. (It makes me feel like a million dollars even when my hair needs brushing after 38 hours.)

Socks or slippers [need link here]

Shoes can be a challenge to pack, but light socks or slippers help, especially if you find your feet cold on long-haul flights.

Electrolytes

I don’t drink alcohol, so going without is my norm, but because cabin air is kept at a super low humidity point (below 20% -- outdoor air is 40-60%) I still find, if I’m not careful, the loss of water can lead to feeling drained, digestive sluggishness, and play havoc with my skin.

(Electrolytes also lower the risk of DVTs, which is always something to consider if you’re on a long-haul flight.)

Face-Masks and Handcream

For the same reason as above, airplane air is drying on my skin. Rather than scroll for the latest blockbuster I often practice guided meditations while I’m flying. (After all, if you’re already suspended in space and time, why not use it to go inward?!)

I also believe wherever you are in the world -- whether land, ocean or air -- it’s important to connect to nature as much as possible. That means, when flying I pull up the blind and absorb the sunrise and the sunset. I get up regularly and stretch…

And depending on my energy, I’ll either work on something inspired and reflective -- or just read, listen, and absorb.

A Simple Practise to Shift Your Energy on a Trip

I’m lucky enough to enjoy travelling and embrace the experience, but I know not everybody feels that way… If you travel a lot for work rather than play, for example, you might view it as a necessary hassle, and feel pushed and pulled in many different directions.

So, here’s a simple ritual I swear by, that can help take the stress out of travelling:

Before I leave, I thank the place I’ve been in.

I consciously surrender to the journey as an adventure.

And I make a choice right there before I walk out the door to enjoy the process.

A Few Practical Tips to Make it Easier

These may sound obvious, but it took a few long-haul flights to realise the value.

Check the weather where you’re going. And pack consciously based on what you’ll actually need, not what you think you might need.

Especially important if you’re going from one climate to another or one season to another -- and your brain needs to switch from winter to summer mode.

Make lists, and keep one especially for ‘Travel Essentials’ in your notes app that you can add to every time you travel long distances.

Again, ultra simple, but eliminates the mental load of trying to remember everything. 🙌

Get a travel credit card that gives you miles for both business and personal.

Basic I know, but it adds up fast!

Invest in a club membership (like an airport lounge) if you travel often.

It’s worth every single penny for the quiet, the Wi-Fi, and the sanity it brings you.

Where I’m Headed Next…

I’ve got a couple of business trips coming up in the US, Austin, Texas, for 10 days, for some speaking training and transformational event training...

I’m also supporting volunteer activities for a larger transformational event in May…

I’d love to get back to Montana for a summer art festival and hiking in the summer.
